To Re-roof Or Repair – What Should You Consider

To make good decision for your home, you need to think in long-term instead of short-term. While short-term solutions offer money savings, that would cancel out in the long run once the solution fails. It’s better to have a long-term solution financially speaking. Although it will cost a lot initially, the trade-off is well worth it because it will last longer and rid you of any hassle in the future.

This is especially true in many regular home repairs such as roofing, asphalt paving, and finishing. In any of these cases, your main goal is to ensure that quality of the home repair. You need the home repair or renovation to last for a very long time. You should be willing to spend more on quality items than settle for subpar quality items. It may sound enticing at first but opting for cheap items would cost you more money in the long run. Think about this, if you choose sub-quality materials, they will be damaged much faster and that would require another repair which costs money. You are better off getting expensive but quality materials to ensure that your renovation or repair last for a very long time.

In this article, we’ll talk about roof repair. In most damaged roofs, the first decision would be to simply patch the leaks or do partial or complete reroofing. If you choose the latter, you’ll then need to decide whether to build over your roof or replace it entirely. Both of these choices would mean spending money either way.

Minor repairs and shingle replacement

Replacing shingles due to accumulated damage is relatively easy and cheap. Damaged shingles can be removed and replaced with new ones. The only downside to this is your new shingle might not match the entirety of the roof. If you are willing to look, you can find shingles that match the color of your weathered shingles but they may cost a bit more. For many homeowners, they are willing to forego the slight mismatched color of the shingle if it means prolonging the life of their roof.

New roof installation

If your roof is showing signs of wear, it does not necessarily mean that you need to replace it immediately. Showing signs of wear is normal for roofs considering that they are exposed to the outside weather 24/7, 365 days a year. Your roof may look worn but as long as it still does its job of protecting you and your house, it is still worth keeping. In roof installation, your first priority is function. Keep in mind that new roof installation is very expensive. You should only do it if your roof has serious problems that can’t be addressed using small repairs. Otherwise, it isn’t recommended to replace the entirety of your roof at the first sign of damage.

Whatever your choice is, your first priority is to ensure the durability of your roof. It protects you from the weather and therefore, it should be built with quality. If you think that your roof is already too worn out, that is the only time you should consider re-roofing. If your roof only has small problems like the occasional leaks here and there, a roof repair should be your best option.
